E. Samar fisherfolks to venture into baking

BORONGAN CITY, April 27 (PIA) -- Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)  granted a livelihood assistance worth P317,000 to Pangudtan Fisheries Aquatic and Resource Management Association of Oras, Eastern Samar.

The livelihood assistance is sourced from DOLE regional office 8 through DOLE-Eastern Samar field office with some counterpart from LGU-Oras.

The project turnover was held at the Oras Municipal lobby on April 25, 2020.

The  26 members of the Pangudtan Fisheries Aquatic and Resource Management Association proposed a project that will provide them with a livelihood through baking and will lead some member to a new field of work, from fishing to baking, said the new Public Employment Service Officer (PESO) Maria Eugene Montallana.

"Since two of their members are master bakers and have experience, the association will venture into a Fisherman's Bakery." She added.

According to Mayor Viviane Alvarez, "Livelihood is a timely intervention, not relief operations. The province of Eastern Samar needs to prepare for a long term intervention. Government funds are scarce; there should be value for money for every disbursement due to COVID-19 crisis."

"If you give your people fish, you will feed them for a moment. Teach your people how to fish and you will feed them a lifetime," Alvarez added.

The project of the association was achieved with the help of former PES designate, Erika Dulfo and the, Maria Eugene Montallana.

DOLE is known as a national government agency that seeks to contribute to poverty reduction through their livelihood programs. (nbq/ RTD/PIA E. Samar)
