Quezon inaugurates its first bio-safety BSL-2+ molecular diagnostic lab

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, May 21 (PIA) --Quezon Governor Danilo Suarez on Tuesday, May 19 led the inauguration of the biosafety level 2 plus (BSL-2+) molecular diagnostic laboratory at the Lucena United Doctors Hospital and Medical Center (LUDHMC), this city.

The Quezon Public Information Office said the facility, granted with a license to operate by the Department of Health (DoH) May 15, is a joint project of the provincial government of Quezon, the city government of Lucena and the LUDHMC. 

During the inauguration rites, Gov. Suarez said, "Quezon has now its own laboratory intended for testing COVID-19 patients with results in just two days, instead of specimens being sent to Manila for testing at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)."

He added the facility will have an initial capacity of processing 90 specimens per day.

Quezon's BSL-2+ molecular laboratory is the 2nd COVID-19 testing laboratory approved by the DOH in CALABARZON region.

The establishment of the laboratory is contained in the Memorandum of Agreement signed May 8, 2020 by Quezon Governor Danilo Suarez along with Lucena City Mayor Roderick Alcala and LUDHMC President Dr. Gerald Carmelo Salazar 

Meanwhile,  Quezon Vice Governor Samuel Nantes, LUDHMC President Dr. Salazar and Integrated Provincial Health Officer Dr. Grace Santiago were also in attendance at the inauguration rites.
