PASIG CITY, May 25 (PIA) -- To beef up and promote urban farming in the metropolis, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), conducted an introductory seminar on urban farming to soldiers and their dependents.
“Through this, our soldiers and their families will be able to ensure the availability and sustainability of food, and provide an alternative livelihood during our nation’s battle against the dreaded virus,” said AFP Chief of Staff General Felimon Santos Jr.
The AFP chief also noted that it is high time to pursue this endeavor towards a s sustainable source of essential goods
The seminar held on Saturday at Camp Aguinaldo’s Daza Park in Quezon City is part of the “Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat Kontra COVID19 Program” (ALPAS SA COVID-19) launched in April.
Mr. Robert C. Blanco of the Bureau of Plant Industry introduced and demonstrated different types of urban farming. The participants were also toured inside the “OJ7 Urban Farming Garden” in Camp Aguinaldo.
AFP Deputy Chief of Staff for Civil Military Operations, J7 chief Major General Edgardo De Leon personally toured the participants to the vegetable garden. He emphasized that this endeavor will not only benefit soldiers and their dependents but also the community. De Leon also enjoined everyone to take on the new normal in helping the nation win the war against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the AFP also directed its different unit commanders to implement and support sustainable food production in their respective camps. (AFP PAO/PIA-NCR)
