Barbershops, salons to reopen June 7 but limited to haircuts only – DTI

PASIG CITY, June 3 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday reminded the public that services provided by barbershops and salons would only be limited to haircuts for customers, as they are scheduled to resume operations in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) starting June 7.

During the Laging Handa Public Briefing, DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Protection Group Ruth Castelo said under a GCQ the Inter-Agency Task Force for COVID-19 (IATF) has approved the operations of barbershops and salons to provide only haircut service.

“For now, limited pa po talaga sa haircut. Haircut lang, so other services like hair color or treatment, or shaving para sa mga lalaki hindi pa po kasama,” Castelo said.

She said that while the service is still limited, however, barbershop and salon operators and staff must still strictly comply with the minimum health standards and safety protocols imposed by the IATF.

“What we want sana, is for the barbershops and salons to practice 'yung ating health protocols. Ma-practice sila, yung workers nila inside and the customers para everybody will get accustomed to these new protocols para po pagka eventually we are able to expand the allowable services alam na po nila pare-pareho kung anong gagawin o kung papaano,” the official explained.

Under the IATF Resolution No. 41 dated May 29, 2020, the gradual reopening of barbershops and salons was approved. 

It states that in areas under the general community quarantine (GCQ), the industry can begin to reopen on June 7 at 30 percent operational capacity.

“The operational capacity of salons and barbershops can gradually increase to 50 percent. Provided that venue capacity allows for social distancing protocols. The gradual increase shall be scheduled every two weeks from the effectivity of this Resolution subject to regular assessment of the IATF. Provided further, that such businesses are compliant with the proper protocols prescribed by the DTI.”

Meanwhile in areas under the modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), the industry is allowed at 50 percent of operational capacity, and up to 100 percent after three weeks, based on Resolution. (PIA-NCR)
