CAGELCO-I installs lights at iconic Buntun bridge

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, June 27 (PIA) - - The long wait is over as the lights of the iconic Buntun bridge in this city was officially switched on by officials of Cagayan Electric Cooperative 1 yesterday.

Francisca Obispo, chief of the Institutional Services Division, said the project which has been requested by the commuters for a long period of time finally received the nod from the board of directors to install lights at the bridge as part of the cooperative's corporate social responsibility.

She said the cooperative alloted P1.9 million fund for the project, from its installation up to the expenses to be incurred for its electric bills.

The Buntun Bridge was completed on June 10, 1969. It was then the longest bridge in the country after its construction that spans the longest river in the country, the Cagayan River.

"The bridge which was dubbed by the locals as the 'Talletay na Butun' (Buntun Bridge) is one of the tourism icons of the province. Some says you can finish singing the Lupang Hinirang while traversing the bridge," Obispo said.

Board President Lorenzo Trinidad, on his part, urged other agencies and organizations to help in improving further the bridge, making it more attractive for tourists and the locals.

"We started the project and I am sure there will be more sponsors to help defray the expenses of the monthly bills," Trinidad said.

The switched on ceremony was attended by some officials led by the cooperative's general manager, Engineer Tito R. Lingan, board of directors, local officials from this city and from the towns of Solana and Enrile, tourism officers and barangay folks of Buntun.

Lingan also believed that lighting the bridge will not only provide brigther road network for commuters but also eliminate possible accidents and crime incidents at night time. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
