BatStateU heralds the country's first KIST Park

BATANGAS CITY, July 6 (PIA) --President Rodrigo Duterte officially designates the Batangas State University Knowledge, Innovation, Science & Technology (KIST) Park as a special economic zone through Proclamation No 947, following recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry. 

Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Charito Plaza and University President Tirso Ronquillo signed the registration agreement June 2, 2020.

The first KIST registered by PEZA, this new type of economic zone allows academic institutions to lease a portion of their properties to business locators in order to foster dynamic collaboration in technological innovation and entrepreneurship.

Slaed to launch July 17, the BatStateU KIST Park aims to create a space for tech start-ups and facilitate the transfer of university know-how to locator companies. PEZA-registered enterprises will tremendously benefit from the high-value intellectual capital and physical resources of Batangas State University, including tax holidays and other non-fiscal benefits from operating within the ecozone.

With the Presidential Proclamation affirming the current administration's intent to lead, engage and make a mark in the knowledge economy, University Pres. Ronquilo envisions the BatStateU KIST Park 'to promote industrial R&D, attract foreign investments in higher value-aded activities, and accelerate the country's transition from a labor-intensive economy to a knowledge-itensive one."

Batangas State University is a Level Iv state university in the CALABARZON region, and the only SUC in the country accredited by the US Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for its Engineering, and Information Technology programs. It is rated 3 stars in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) list of top universities. (PIA-Batangas/BatStateU KIST PARK)
