CALOOCAN CITY, July 7 (PIA) -- Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque on Monday dismissed as “fake news” some reports that claimed hospital beds in Metro Manila have run out due to a record-high cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines on Sunday.
“Nililinaw po namin na yung mga kumakalat na fake news na ubos na daw po ang mga hospital beds ng ating mga hospital, hindi po yan totoo,” Roque said during his Malacañang media, following the country’s recording an all-time high, single-day increase in COVID-19 cases of 2,434 new infections, and with Metro Manila accounting for the majority of the COVID-19 cases in the island nation.
“Ang critical care utilization ng Metro Manila, at ito po ay kasama na yung hospital beds, ICU beds, yung mechanical ventilator, at saka mga isolation beds ay nasa 63 percent,” he added.
Roque further said the Department of Health (DOH) officials and Metro Manila hospitals’ medical directors recently met and have come to an agreement that 30 percent of hospital bed capacity will be allotted for COVID-19 patients.
“So ang napagkasunduan po ay talagang mag-aallot ng 30 percent of hospital beds para sa COVID, bagamat humingi po ang mga pribadong ospital na kung pupwede payagan muna sila hanggang 20 percent at saka na po mag-iincrease,” he said.
Roque said the country is still far from breaching the 30 percent hospital beds allotted for COVID-19 cases.
“Hindi pa po nabi-breach itong 30 percent na ito. Bakit po? Kasi marami po, lalong-lalo na yung mga pribadong ospital, less than 30 percent ang kanilang ina-allot po dahil dun sa tinatawag na absorptive capacity,” he explained.
He also said Health Undersecretary Leopoldo “Bong” Vega has been designated as the point person and head of the One Hospital Incident Command, which will determine and provide regular information on critical care utilization and hospital care and capacity.
As of Sunday afternoon, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases tallied 44,254.
Of the new cases there were 1,147 "fresh," or those whose test results were released in the last 3 days with the remaining 1,287 were "late" cases.
Of the fresh cases, 440 were recorded from Metro Manila, 364 from Central Visayas, and 336 from other regions, while 7 were repatriates.
On the other hand, among the late cases, 629 were from Metro Manila, 238 from Central Visayas, and 420 from other areas.
Those who died from COVID-19 went up to 1,297, after 7 fatalities were added, with six of the seven new deaths occurred within June, while there was a record 489 additional recoveries reported that brought the total number to 11,942. (PIA NCR)
