PLGU S. Leyte adopts new Filipino gesture of goodwill, no more to handshake

MAASIN CITY, July 29 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Southern Leyte now adopts a new Pilipino gesture of goodwill, praise and respect instead of the traditional handshake amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Provincial Governor Damian Mercado recently urged the municipal and city local government units to observe the new normal greetings and quoted HR No. 408  authored by Rep. Bayani Fernando that promotes the simple act of gracefully laying the palm of the right hand over the center of the chest with a simultaneous slight head nod as a customary Filipino gesture of goodwill, praise and respect.

Mercado even started to act on it during the awarding ceremony for the frontliners of the province during the 60th founding anniversary celebration this month, however, he reacted that he would be comfortable to see eye to eye instead of nodding the head.

He noted the risks of the traditional gesture of handshake which exposes the transmission of communicable diseases, particularly endangering one’s health in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, as the City of Maasin Sangguniang Panglungsod moved to adopt the new Filipino gesture of goodwill and praise, they also urged all its barangays to observe the same in a resolution approved unanimously.

They underscored that the new act of gracefully laying the palm of the right hand over the center of the chest is a better alternative to the traditional handshake through Resolution Number 440 passed during its 56th session held last July 14, 2020 at Sangguniang Panglungsod Session Hall in Maasin City.
