NEGROS ORIENTAL, Aug. 19 (PIA) –- Some 420 locally stranded individuals (LSIs) from Cebu province arrived on Aug. 18, 2020 in Dumaguete City via Cokaliong Shipping.
Provincial Tourism Operations Officer Myla Abellana said with the closure of the Samboan Port, the LSIs or passengers opted to take the Colaliong vessel which ferry passengers once a week and arrives at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday from Cebu.
The local government unit of Samboan, Cebu issued Executive Order 36 temporarily closing the Samboan Port starting Aug. 12, 2020 due to the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases, including those contracted from a security guard of Matiao port.
With that, Dante Matiao, proprietor of Matiao Shipping and transportation committee head of Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), said the Samboan Port is still closed for passengers traveling to and from Negros Island via Matiao Shipping until such time Negros Oriental will have its own facility for the stranded passengers or LSIs.
Matiao said he had a talk with the Samboan Mayor that the EO will be lifted until the LSIs or other passengers will no longer stay or stand by at the port waiting for the Negros local government units’ acceptance.
With the arrival of LSIs via Cokaliong vessel from Cebu City, Abellana requested LGUs in the province to pick up their residents on time so that they will not loiter or stay long in the area as part of health measures.
Of the total LSI arrivals, over 200 come from Guihulngan City and the rest from other towns and cities. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
