COMELEC: Voter registration resumes on September 1

BORONGAN CITY, August 20 (PIA) -- The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in this city announced that voters’ registration will resume on September 1, 2020.

This is according to Atty. Bliz Desery G. Inciso-Duzon, city election officer in an interview on Tuesday.

Atty. Duzon said that COMELEC Central Office issued an order that the voter registration will resume in areas under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) or Modified General Community Quarantine (MECQ) on September 1, 2020 nationwide except in areas under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) or Modified ECQ due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Duzon said the voter registration will only be for the following: new registrants that will turn 18 on May 9, 2020, re-activation voter (meaning those who did not vote for two consecutive elections), changed status (from single to married), correction of entry, transferee from other cities/municipalities, and transferee from other barangays within Borongan City.

The COMELEC officer added that applications for registration may be submitted from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City COMELEC Office.

“As the COMELEC reopens voters’ registration, we are encouraging applicants to download the application forms from www.comelec.gov.ph,” Duzon said.

She said that it is recommended that the downloaded forms be filled out before going to the City COMELEC Office for registration.

The City COMELEC Office will observe health protocols and other anti-COVID-19 precautions will be implemented such as limiting the number of people to be allowed inside the City COMELEC Office to ensure compliance with physical distancing, requiring applicants to wear face masks and face shields, and encouraging them to bring their own pens.

Registrants will also be required to fill out a “Coronavirus Self Declaration Form” which discloses information relating to travel, contact with people with known COVID-19 infection and symptoms being experienced.

Members of vulnerable sectors, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant women will be provided an express lane.

Duzon is calling and appealing to the new registrants to register on September 1 onwards, not on the date of deadline.

The Voter Registration will start on September 1, 2020 and will end on September 30, 2021. (nbq/SDC/PIA-E. Samar)
