Ilocos region's rice production increases by 1.23 percent

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Aug. 29 (PIA)- The Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 1 (DA-RFO1) has reported that the rice production in the Ilocos region increased by 1.23 percent for the first semester of 2020.

According to the DA-RFO1, it was recorded that the volume of the production is at 494,887.85 metric tons, an increase of 6,033 metric tons compared to the same period last year which is at 488,855.

“Our rice product in the province of La Union recorded the highest which is at 19.83 percent,” said DA-RFO1 Rice Banner Program (RBP) focal person Analiza Ramos.

Further, the province of Ilocos Sur’s data showed a 2.42 percent increase, while Ilocos Norte and Pangasinan provinces are at 2.42 percent and 0.91 percent, respectively.

"Though Pangasinan’s increase is not very significant, it is still the major producer of rice in the Ilocos region, it still comprises 69 percent to the regional aggregate,” Ramos added.

In addition, the DA-RFO1 expressed that the yield of metric tons per hectare has been the highest level ever recorded for the past years at 4.86.

Data showed that the province of Ilocos Sur noted the highest yield at 5.30 metric tons, followed by Ilocos Norte at 5.21 metric tons.

La Union and Pangasinan registered 4.92 and 4.74 metric tons, accordingly.

Moreover, there was a slight decrease in the area harvested at 0.29 percent or an equivalent of 299.7 hectares.

“The output increments in the production and yield were achieved through the implementation of key production and productivity-enhancing technology interventions,” Ramos said.

The DA stated that the interventions include utilization of high quality and inbred seed that is matching with favorable weather conditions.

Ramos also said, the DA will continue to distribute various farm production and post-harvest machineries, equipment and facilities along with the construction of and rehabilitation of Small-Scale Irrigation Projects in the region through the RBP.

The RBP is one of the programs of the DA which is mainly concerned in rice farming and uplifting the lives of Filipino farmers following the Agri-Pinoy framework to promote food sufficiency, sustainable resource management, support to farm to table, and broad-based local partnerships.
