QUEZON CITY, Sept. 1 (PIA) - The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - National Inland Fisheries Technology Center (BFAR-NIFTC) launched a research project that would increase production of ayungin and biya as part of providing food security.
Dubbed the “Larval Rearing of Naturally Bred Ayungin and Biya with Focus on Diet and Nutrition", the project aims to increase the quality and production through the development of nutrient-enriched live diets for the two species in Tanay, Rizal.
“Itong project na ito magagamit sa BASIL and sa increased production ng Ayungin at Biya. The NFRDI being the research arm of BFAR is here to support their projects,” NFRDI Acting Executive Director Dr. Lilian Garcia said.
BASIL (Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa) Project is a national program that aims to restore the physical conditions of lakes, rivers, and small reservoirs, which are generally found in upland and landlocked areas where there is a deficiency in fish supply; and, to enhance the fisheries and repopulate indigenous species. It is also in support of biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation, and food sufficiency, the BFAR said. (MCG/PIA-IDPD/NFRDI)
