TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Sept. 19 (PIA) - - - Around 200 cyclists from this province and Isabela join the Rotaract Club of Tuguegarao Citadel’s biking-for-a-cause dubbed as ‘Project 2Ps: Padyak to support #EndPolio campaign’ conducted today.
Tirso Mangada, president of the club said the activity which is an income generating project aimed to generate funds for the Rotary Foundation, Rotary International managed foundation that initiates activities to end polio cases worldwide.
Portion of the proceeds, he said, will be donated to the Rotary Foundation and the rest would be utilized by the club for their future projects relative to the campaign.
He said the activity was conducted today to drumbeat awareness among the public to stay clean and healthy especially among children as last year of the same day today, the Philippines recorded an outbreak of polio after 18 years of being free from the disease.
The activity that was participated in by bikers from Tuguegarao City and different municipalities in Cagayan to include Tuao, Solana, Enrile, Amulung, Gonzaga, and Tumaini town in Isabela, was conducted simultaneously within participants’ municipal boundaries.
“Aside from its main purpose to support Rotary International’s End Polio campaign, the activity also aims to promote safe riding among users of bicycles especially now that it has become one of the mode of transportations due to pandemic,” Mangada said.
Jerick Bañares, project leader, on the other hand, said that in compliance to IATF guidelines, only bikers whose age are 21 years old and above were allowed to participate.
Minimum health protocols such as wearing of face mask when the bikers are not actively biking and social distancing during stop over were observed according to Bañares.
“The activity was conducted smoothly as there were no major problems the club have encountered. We had minor problems but over-all, all the riders were safe and that’s our main priority,” Bañares added.
Bañares also expressed his gratitude to the Cagayan Police Provincial Office headed by Police Colone Ariel Quilang, Tuguegarao City Police Station, Tuao Police Station, Peñablanca Police Station and Isabela Police Provincial Office.
As of writing, the activity was able to generate at least P18,000.
Prizes such as one new mountain bike, bicycling accessories and food vouchers courtesy of the club’s sponsors were up for grabs during its online advocacy campaign tonight. (MJCP)
