Backyard hog slaughtering, ambulant meat vendors banned in Cabarroguis

CABARROGUIS, Quirino, Sept. 26 (PIA)—To contain the African Swine Fever (ASF) in this town, Mayor Willard Abuan has issued an executive order banning temporarily the practice of backyard slaughtering of hogs as well as the entry of ambulant meat vendors in the municipality.

The temporary prohibition of the practice of backyard slaughtering of hogs and banning ambulant meat vendors is in support to the policies, regulation and guidelines issued by the Department of Agriculture to address ASF-related issues and to contain and control the spread of the dreaded hog disease in the country.

Under his Executive Order No. 96, Abuan has directed all hog raisers to slaughter their hogs at the municipal abattoir/slaughterhouse and not in their backyards.

Abuan, however, accorded exemption to hog raisers in the far-flung barangays such as Tucod, Dibibi, Dingasan, Eden, Gomez, Calaocan and Villarose, provided that slaughtering may be done only after the inspection of the municipal meat inspector.

“Slaughtering by hog raisers, at the slaughterhouse or at the backyard, shall only be done every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to be supported by barangay certification attesting personal ownership of the hog to be butchered,” Abuan further ordered.

Abuan likewise said that banning the entry of ambulant vendors selling pork and pork-related and by-products in fresh, frozen, processed and cooked form and other meat products which could not be discounted for possibilities of contamination shall hereby imposed in order to control the spread of the disease.

He also enjoined the participation of the barangay officials through vigilant monitoring, dissemination and certification of the health status of hogs prior to slaughtering.  (MDCT/TCB/PIA 2-Quirino)
