SAN FERNANDO CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – Choosing between what specific artificial or natural method of family planning, whichever is best for their body, is always the choice of the couple.
“We believe contraception is the key to population management by avoiding unplanned and unwanted pregnancies by the women,” Erma Yapit, regional director of Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) in the Ilocos, said during the celebration of the World Population Day on Friday.
A few of the modern natural methods are Basal Body Temperature Method (BBTM), Cervical Mucus Method, Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM), and the Standard Days Method (SDM).
There are also artificial methods like the use of intra-uterine device, contraceptive pills, condom, and injectable.
Bilateral tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men are the permanent methods of family planning.
Popcom in the Ilocos' statistics for this year show that for the men population, only 62 out of the 11,754 who availed of their services this year requested condom and a very small number availed of vasectomy services.
“The region is still a pill-consuming population but we continue to reach out to the men through Kalalakihang Tapat sa Responsibilidad at Obligasyon sa Pamilya (KATROPA) so that more will be encouraged to avail of these methods,” Yapit said.
Rogelio Ordono, with the consent of her wife, has undergone vasectomy procedure since 23 years old.
“I had no regrets, this is for my family as we planned to give them a good life and provide for their needs without worrying if my wife will get pregnant again then after our three children,” Ordono shares.
“All the natural and artificial family planning methods promoted by Popcom are scientifically-proven to be safe, effective, and reliable,” Wilma Ulpindo, Popcom 1 assistant regional director, said after debunking the common myths and misconceptions on the different contraceptives.
“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, more couples with unmet targets were reached and provided with information and services but we need to do more,” Ulpindo said.
As of September 23, a total of 38,839 couples were reached in the region and 11,757 with identified unmet needs served.
Meanwhile, Popcom’s Health and Wellness Clinic is open every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 AM to 3:00PM and provides free family planning information and services like the Progestin Sub-dermal Implant (PSI) insertion for walk-in and referred clients.
Pap smear test and screening can also be availed free as one of their newest services in the said clinic.
