MMDA to give at least one-week heads up on gradual close of EDSA U-turn slots

CALOOCAN CITY, Sept. 21 (PIA) -- Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Jojo Garcia on Monday said they would provide at least one-week notice to motorists prior to the gradual closing of 13 U-turn slots along EDSA to make way for a new bus lane.

During this morning’s Laging Handa public briefing hosted by the Presidential Communications, Garcia said they would be closing down the U-turn slots on a piecemeal basis, as buses have now taken the two leftmost lanes of the highway under the new traffic system of the MMDA.

“Alam naman natin ang ginagawa nating bus lane na nasa middle lane, so if ever na itutuloy na natin 'yan ay maapektuhan ang U-turn slots,” Garcia said, adding that the closure of the U-turn slots will reportedly make travel time faster for buses plying EDSA.

“Pero hindi naman natin sila sabay ihihinto, uuntiin natin. Magkakaroon kami ng 1-week advisory. Every time magsasara kami ng U-turn may one week kaming advisory,” he added, however.

“Ang target po talaga natin dito is to give priority sa ating mga commuters na mas nakakarami,” he furthered.

Garcia He said the first segment to be closed next week is the North Avenue U-turn slot before MRT-North Avenue.

“Unahin lang natin 'yung medyo busy doon sa may North Avenue sa may Trinoma at SM. Iyong isasara sa Trinoma is scheduled one week from today,” he said.

The MMDA is set to gradually close 13 U-turn slots along EDSA in the next three months for its new bus lane.

In an advisory, the MMDA said among those that will be closed are three U-turn slots in Caloocan City: General Tinio U-turn slot, De Jesus Street/ 8th Street left turning, and General Malvar U-turn slot.

The MMDA, however, said all affected vehicles must take a turn at Monumento Circle (Northbound towards southbound) and Balintawak Cloverleaf (Southbound towards northbound) to their points of destination.

Vehicles coming from NLEX (North of Luzon) towards or taking left at A. De Jesus/8th Street must go straight, take A. Bonifacio Avenue, then right at C3/Sgt. Rivera to destination.

Likewise, in Quezon City, there will be a total of seven U-turn slots that will be affected between Balintawak Cloverleaf and Quezon Avenue: Balintawak Market U-turn slot in front of BPI, Kaingin Road U-turn slot in front of Nissan, Congressional LRT Station U-turn slot in front of PANORAMA, Corregidor intersection/Bansalangin U-turn slot, U-turn slot in front of Quezon City Academy, North Avenue U-turn slot before MRT-North Avenue, and Santolan/Boni Serrano U-turn slot in front of Camp Crame.

All affected vehicles must take U-turn at Balintawak Cloverleaf (southbound) and Quezon Avenue (northbound) to destination, the MMDA said.

On the other hand, in Makati City, the Buendia U-turn slot under the Kalayaan Flyover will be closed.

The MMDA advised motorists coming from Guadalupe (southbound to northbound) using Buendia U-turn slot must take a U-turn using the service road/ intersection of EDSA/ Ayala Avenue to destination.

Moreover, in Pasay City, two U-turn slots will be closed: P. Celle U-turn slot and the U-turn slot before Roxas Boulevard near Heritage Hotel.

The agency said all affected vehicles coming from FB Harrison (northbound to southbound) shall take U-turn slot under Magallanes Flyover and vehicles coming from south going north must take signalized intersection or MOA Circle.

The MMDA will also provide alternate U-turn slots that motorists may use instead of the aforementioned slots. (PIA NCR)
