CEBU CITY, Sept. 14 (PIA) -- The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM-7) marked the 26th National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW) on the first week of September with various activities modified due to COVID-19 pandemic.
This year's NCPW carries the theme, “Komunidad ay Pangalagaan nang Pandemya at Krimen ay Maiwasan.”
NAPOLCOM-7 Attorney Officer V and Officer-in-Charge of Office of the Assistant Regional Director Atty. Risty Sibay said during the virtual Kapihan sa PIA that the observance this year focused on crime prevention strategies and measures and promote community safety.
It will also contribute sustainability development and enhance the quality of life amid the pandemic.
Sibay emphasized that this is not only one week of celebration but this should be part of the public's daily concern since it involves crimes.
During the virtual launching of NCPW, it was reported that there is a drop in crime incidents by as much as 50 percent nationwide due to the lockdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Region 7, there is also a significant decrease in crime incidents during the onset of lockdowns, said Sibay.
He added that aside from the strict implementation of health protocols during this pandemic, law enforcement personnel are also continuously campaigning against illegal drugs and cybercrimes which are rampant nowadays.
For the regional observance of NCPW, part of the information, communication and education (IEC) activities are webinars on cyberbullying, sexual harassment, anti-rape law, drug abuse prevention, and fake news.
The activities aim to create crime prevention awareness and appreciation especially during the pandemic and to foster interest and participation in crime prevention, public health, and safety. (hfg/PIA7)
