BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 23 (PIA) -- The Philippine Military Academy(PMA) remains closed to tourists even as Baguio City opens its doors to visitors starting this week.
PMA Commandant of Cadets Brigadier General Romeo Brawner Jr., during the Coordinated Operations to Defeat Epidemic (C.O.D.E.) Team meeting-visit on Saturday, requested that PMA be exempted from the tourists areas in the city that would be opened to tourists initially from Region 1.
The request to exempt PMA from opening its doors to tourists is a way to maintain the health and wellness and the safety of the PMA cadets and officials from the COVID-19 as cases continue to rise in the city and in the country. PMA has no COVID- case to date.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong gave assurance that the PMA, his alma matter, will be off limits to tourists as the city starts welcoming visitors.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PMA has undertaken precautions to ensure safety inside the Fort Del Pilar. Last February, the PMA temporarily prohibited tourists from entering the facility. The Academy also limited activities attended by the cadets outside of the institution.
PMA traditional activities such as the graduation of the PMA “Masidlawin” Class of 2020 was held virtually without parents and other guests in attendance last May 22. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the virtual graduation rite which was done for the first time, as an effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June, incoming plebes were subjected to health guidelines prescribed by the national government including swab testing and undergoing quarantine before they were allowed to join the military school.
The PMA entrance examinations were also re-scheduled to later dates to establish strict health protocols in the different testing centers nationwide for those interested Filipino youth to enter the premiere institution. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
