NIA inaugurates Php70M- worth diversion dam in Ifugao

LAMUT, Ifugao, Oct. 5 (PIA) - - Supply of water for irrigation in this municipality will be more reliable and efficient with the completion of the diversion dam of the Hapid Irrigation System (HIS) at barangay Bimpal here.

The Php70 million-worth structure was inaugurated last week by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) led by its Regional Manager Benito Espique, Jr.  with Ifugao local officials and other directors of national government agencies in the Cordillera region.

The improved diversion dam will enhance the water flow of the irrigation system supporting barangays Hapid, Sanafe, Pugol, Salamague, Poblacion East, Poblacion West, Mabatobato, Lawig, Umilag, Magulon, and Pieza.

More than 1,500 farmers in said barangays can now have sufficient water supply for their farms. The irrigated area of the system is pegged at 1,040 hectares for this wet season.

The HIS  is one of the projects funded under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program-Irrigation Component (CARP-IC).It was partially completed in 1996 when water was released to the first irrigable area and farmers  were  able to  plant palay.

The irrigation project was officially opened in November 2002 with a total construction cost of Php224M. It had then a gravity intake-type diversion which draws irrigation water from the Ibulao River.

The gravity intake-type diversion, however, is  prone to damages during calamities. With this problem, the clamor for a dam-type structure at the source led to the construction of the diversion dam.

Meanwhile, the Alfonso Lista Pump Irrigation Project will start soon after the groundbreaking ceremony last October 3. The project will draw water from the Magat Dam which will be diverted to a target service area of 2,300 hectares in barangays Sto. Domingo, Namnama, Calupaan and Namillangan.
