PDEA destroys over P8.22-M worth dangerous drugs

ILOILO CITY, Oct. 16 (PIA) – A total of P8,221,704.14 worth of confiscated dangerous drugs by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Western Visayas were destroyed.

The destruction of said dangerous drugs, October 15, was led by PDEA 6 Regional Director Edgar S. Apalla at the Gegato-Abecia Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., Iloilo City.

PDEA 6 Information Officer Shey Tanaleon, in a press release, said that the dangerous drugs that were subject of destruction were those confiscated drug evidence during anti-drug operations which cases were already terminated.

Those turned over by other law enforcement agencies (OLEAs) that are covered with court orders for destruction were included in the said destruction yesterday, she said.

“PDEA key officials, representatives from the Regional Crime Laboratory Office 6, other law enforcement agencies, Department of Justice, the Judiciary, Civil Society Groups and media practitioners witnessed the destruction activity,” Tanaleon said.

Destroyed through thermal decomposition were a total of 1,142.9946 grams of methamphetamine HCI, worth P7,772,363.28; 3,741.2947 grams of marijuana dried leaves and seeds worth P448,955.36; 1.0100 of ephedrine worth P353.50; and two tablets of diazepam worth P32.00, she added.

Thermal decomposition, or thermolysis, is the method of decomposition or breaking down of chemicals by heat. At 1,000 degrees centigrade, all dangerous drugs are totally decomposed or broken down.

The directive to immediately destroy seized illegal drugs was under the context of Section 21(4) of Republic Act 9165 or The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, DDB Regulation 1 series of 2002 and 2007. (PIA6/PDEA6)
