ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov 24 (PIA) – Protecting the rights of the children amidst the pandemic is the advocacy of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Consciousness Week this year. The Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council (JJWC) is continuously doing its policy making, coordinating and monitoring body through its member and coordinating agencies with the implementation of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.
The observation this year themed “Karapatan ng bawat bata sa panahon ng pandemya siguruhin, pagpapatupad ng Juvenile Justice Law paigtingin” spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office IX (DSWD), focuses on the advocacy of the rights of the children and at the same time encourage the children who were victims of circumstances who committed wrongdoings.
“It is not your fault. It’s not the end of the world for all of you. The government is giving you a second chance. A chance to straighten your path and to continue the goal that wished achieved,” said DSWD IX Social Welfare Officer Jacqueline Julpi.
With the New Normal, the activities for the observance will be held online disseminating information on the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act or RA 9344 as amended by RA 10630. The law was passed to address the plight of the Children At Risk (CAR) and Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) in the Philippines. In the past, the Philippines’ minimum age of criminal liability was 9 years old but when the law was passed it was raised to 15 years old.
DSWD IX emphasized the importance of the observation of JJW Consciousness Week which is to express affirmation to the 1987 Constitution which states that: “The State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the youth patriotism and nationalism and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs.”
“Be responsible with yourselves and your actions. It will bring you to the path you choose. Be respectful to your parents because they can lead you to the right path and endow with you wisdom you need,” Julpi added. (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
