ILOILO CITY, Nov. 4 (PIA) --- The community-based mushroom production facility (CBMP) established by the Gender and Development Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas benefitted a women’s organization in Bingawan, Iloilo.
In a media release, the P191,239 worth of CBMP facility which was completed early this year has helped augment the source of income of the members of Jesus Saves Baptist Church (JSBC) Rural Improvement Club (RIC) in Barangay Alabidhan, Bingawan, Iloilo.
DA 6 Local Operations Management Section chief Carmelita C. Fantilanan said the CBMP project aims to utilize and promote bioconversion of farm waste materials into the production of edible mushrooms.
“This project hopes to increase and improve the nutritional quality of food supply in the rural areas and raise farm productivity and income in rice-based farming communities,” she said.
Fantilanan said that the active participation of the members of the RIC became vital for the project to be succesful.
“All members play an important role in the sustainability of this program, you are the actors of this beautiful milestone in your organization, " she added.
Meanwhile, Bingawan Rural Improvement Club Coordinator Emily Paraonda said the project helped mothers with small children and senior citizens by providing additional income to their household.
“The mushroom production project served as a source of income to many members of the RIC,” she said.
The establishment of the mushroom fruiting facility was completed on January 21, 2020, and on August 6, they underwent technical training in mushroom production.
After the training, they received initial production materials including 100 mushroom fruiting bags, cotton, flat rum, empty bottles, rubber band, aluminium foil, Petri dish, beaker, spatula, alcohol, and surgical blade and handle.
After a month, the JSBC Rural Improvement Club has already harvested more than 50 kilograms of fresh cultured oyster mushroom from September 13, 2020, up to the present.
The high demand for oyster mushroom in Bingawan, Iloilo helped them generate P16,500.00 total sales for a short period.
From 100 fruiting bags, the RIC has already more than 1,500 mushroom fruiting bags in the facility and hopes to continuously increase their stocks.
Recently, the RIC has already started supplying oyster mushroom in the town of Calinog. (JSC/LTP/DA6/PIA6 Iloilo)
