CALOOCAN CITY, Nov. 6 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte praised the quick response of government agencies following Typhoon Rolly’s onslaught in the Bicol region particularly by bringing in much-needed aid to affected residents.
“You know, I’d like also to comment about ito si Rolly sa DSWD. He was well ahead. He was there already when the typhoon was ongoing,” President Duterte, on Thursday evening, Nov. 5, said in a public address on government’s response on the coronavirus pandemic,
While the number of Air Force’s flights are not sufficient to airlift relief assistance, President Duterte said, “we are transporting the goods as fast as we can".
Numerous government agencies continue to extend relief operations and distribution to Catanduanes and other areas affected by Typhoon Rolly.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque told President Duterte during Thursday’s meeting that Social Welfare Secretary Rolando Bautista flew to the typhoon-stricken Catanduanes to personally hand over the family food packs in various municipalities.
According to Roque, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio visited Catanduanes and extended P1.5-million donation to the provincial government.
Meanwhile, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told President Duterte in the briefing that the troops deployed in Southern Luzon and Bicol region are coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Department of Energy (DOE) to help repair major facilities destroyed by the typhoon.
“Doon po sa relief operations sa Catanduanes, nag-umpisa na pong maghakot ‘yung ating C-130 kahapon ng mga foodstuffs at saka iba pang mga supplies para doon at tutuloy po ito hangga’t kinakailangang pumunta roon,” Lorenzana told the President.
“Mayroon tayong nakaantabay na dalawang C-130 at saka apat na C-295 kung kinakailangan mang magdala ng mga supplies,” he added.
Authorities said there are 35,000 families affected by Typhoon Rolly in Catanduanes. Ten thousand houses were reported to be totally damaged by the typhoon while there were 19,000 partially damaged.
More than 7,000 evacuees are being housed in government centers while 45,886 are staying in private homes.
As of this writing, power, water, and telecommunication services still need to be restored. (PIA NCR)
