QUEZON CITY, Dec. 18 (PIA) –The regional office of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources in the National Capital Region (DENR NCR) and the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Payatas in Quezon City forged a partnership agreement for urban farming and greening project in the area.
Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan and Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson Lhester Pangilinan signed the Memorandum of Agreement on Urban Farming/Greening on Thursday, 10 December 2020 via online video conferencing app.
The agreement involves the establishment of five (5) community-based planting sites in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City.
DENR NCR will provide vegetable seedlings and other planting stock (including fruit-bearing species), technical assistance, and training on proper planting techniques, caring, protection, and maintenance of planted seedlings to the host community.
Caancan said that the program to encourage urban farming/greening in Metro Manila is part of the regional office’s effort to address the issue of food security and poverty reduction amidst the pandemic.
“Trees and plants not only help increase biodiversity and climate resiliency of an area but, as we have seen especially the past few months when the supply chain for important food products was affected by quarantine measures, can also provide us Metro Manilans with alternative food sources and an activity to help calm our minds and cope with quarantine fatigue”, Caancan explained.
“The rise of plantitos and plantitas attest to the growing importance of plants in the ‘new normal’, which is why we’re encouraging others, especially our youth and student sector holed up in their homes, to start planting,” Caancan further explained.
The official pledged support saying that DENR NCR will be more than willing to help them with their greening goals. (PIA NCR)
