DOH to put up hubs for COVID vaccine storage

CALOOCAN CITY, Dec. 22 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) will be putting up hubs for the storage and efficient administration of COVID-19 vaccines once the country is able to secure them.

"Sa ngayon, meron tayong mapa ng logistical areas natin kung saan meron tayong capacity for storing and for distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine na papunta," DOH Undersecretary Rosario Vergeire said in the DOH press briefing on Monday, Dec. 21.

Vergeire said the storage requirements for various COVID-19 vaccines differ, thus the government would have to prepare for them.

The DOH cited that it already has an existing hub in place for vaccines requiring from 2 to 8 degrees Celsius storage requirement.

"Kapag 2 to 8 degrees [°C], may central hubs sa Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) tapos meron tayong distribution areas at temporary storage din sa Regional Offices na meron na ganyan klase na freezers," Vergeire said.

She said the DOH will also be distributing the vaccines to all of its Rural Health Unit (RHU) facilities and will be administering them to the public either through community or facility-based approach.

Vergeire said the RITM can also store vaccines needing negative 20 degrees °C temperature.

"Kung para naman doon sa negative 20 degrees, meron din kakayahan ang ating RITM at meron din tayong binubuo na storage facilities na bago kagaya nung sa Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital kung saan patapos na yung gagawin na hub doon for vaccines," Vergeire said.

These vaccines, however, will still be coming from the centralized hubs before they will be delivered down to local health facilities.

The DOH is also coordinating and negotiating with the private sector to arrange freezers for COVID-19 vaccines that require from negative 70 to 80 degrees °C to store. (PIA-NCR)
