DOT to provide cash aid to affected tourism workforce

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Dec. 21 (PIA) -- Affected workforce in the tourism industry by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic will receive a one-time financial assistance from the Department of Tourism (DOT).

This was announced by Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat in a press conference with local media in La Union as one of her official engagements in the province recently.

“Gusto namin lahat mabigyan, lahat ng tourism stakeholders, ng PhP5.000.00 each,” Puyat told the media.

She informed that because of Bayanihan to Recover as One (Bayanihan 2), the following primary beneficiaries may avail of the said cash assistance:

1.         Displaced DOT-accredited and local government unit (LGU)-Licensed Tour Guides;

2.         Displaced employees of DOT-accredited Primary Tourism Enterprises;

3.         Displaced employees of DOT-accredited Secondary Tourism Enterprises;

4.         LGU-Licensed Primary Tourism Enterprises (primary tourism enterprises, and tourism trainers that are not accredited by DOT but are   registered by their LGUs); and

5.         Members of registered Community-Based Tourism Organizations (CBTOs) (organized groups in a community exclusively serving tourists in an attraction or destination duly registered with the relevant National Government Agency or the relevant LGU).

For his part, DOT-1 Regional Director Jeff Ortega said his office has started coordinating with the provincial governments and LGUs to submit the list of qualified individuals from their area.

“Humihingi kami ng tulong sa LGUs na magsubmit na ng listahan ng lahat ng puwedeng makatanggap nito. Ang lahat ng mayors at governors ay tinatawagan namin,” Ortega said.

He also emphasized that “the DOT is apolitical and we will make sure that the help goes to everybody regardless of their political affiliation.”

“We need your help to disseminate the proper and right information to the public,” he told the media.

The DOT, led by Puyat, wants to distribute the assistance to the tourism workers this Christmas season. (JCR/JPD, PIA La Union)
