Marikina mayor bans use of firecrackers, pyrotechnic devices to welcome New Year

PASIG CITY, Dec. 27 (PIA) -- The City Government of Marikina has banned the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in welcoming the New Year amid the pandemic.

“I have issued an Executive Order prohibiting the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in Marikina this New Year. This is to prevent the mass gathering of people and ensure the safety of our constituents,” Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said in a statement.

Mayor Teodoro said that the city government’s primary concern is the health and safety of the public.

“Our primordial concern is the health and safety of the public, we do not want them to get infected with coronavirus, which has already claimed lives.”

Likewise, Mayor Marcy said that the city's annual community-based fireworks display and concert will not push through to prevent mass gathering that may pose threat in COVID-19 transmission.

The local chief executive said that the order complies with Resolution No. 19 of the Regional Peace and Order Council, adopting the recommendation on the ban on firecrackers in the National Capital Region. (PIA-NCR)
