PDEA teams up with PIA on anti-drugs drive

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Dec. 21 (PIA) -- The La Union provincial offices of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) partner for anti-illegal drugs campaign.

Dheo A. Tabor, PDEA La Union provincial officer, said his office sought for the help of the PIA in the campaign against illegal drugs through a regular guesting on radio program.

“Ang dalawang opisina ay nagkaroon ng MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) with the intent ng PDEA na mas makalapit sa ating mamamayan at mas matulungan hanggang sa ating grassroots level through the efforts and help of PIA,” Tabor said.

The weekly radio segment is named after “Barangay PDEA” which is a brainchild of PDEA’s Director General Wilkins Villanueva.

“Ang Barangay PDEA ay isang konsepto ng paglapit ng aming opisina sa mga barangay at para may direkta kaming pakikipagusap hanggang sa pinakamaliit na yunit ng LGU. Through this, we have to achieve the Barangay Drug Clearing Program (BDCP),” he said.

In a statement, Villanueva said “the BDCP is the main framework of the agency’s anti-drug strategy that embodies a holistic and whole-of-nation approach in addressing the country’s drug problem. That is why there is a need to widely disseminate the program to enjoin the local government units (LGUs) and people in the communities to support and help in its implementation.”

Aired live every Thursdays over 104.3 MyFM, the Barangay PDEA radio segment is hosted by PIA La Union staff with guests from the PDEA La Union or PDEA regional office here.

“Bale itong radio program in partnership with the PIA ay localized concept ng Barangay PDEA. Halimbawa, may gusto kayong malaman at maintindihan sa BDCP, puwedeng itawag sa amin through this program or sa aming hotline,” Tabor further informed.

Through Barangay PDEA, he emphasized the crucial role of the barangay officials in the fight against illegal drugs.

“Alam naman po natin na ang kampanya laban sa iligal droga ay priority program ng ating pamahalaan ngayon. Without the help of our barangay officials, ay hindi po ito magtatagumpay,” he said.

Currently, PDEA La Union has cleared 106 out of the 501 drug-affected barangays in La Union.

Of the 20 LGUs, 12 municipalities and this city are remaining to be cleared.

Tabor said with active support from the provincial government down to the barangay level, PDEA La Union hopes to declare the whole province of La Union as drug-cleared in the next coming years.  (JCR/JPD, PIA La Union)
