DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 28 (PIA) -- Following the implementation of major infrastructure projects in Dumaguete City last year, the city government is also planning to create more open spaces around the city.
Mayor Felipe Remollo disclosed this during his interview with Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Sec. Martin Andanar for the Laging Handa Network Briefing News which was streamed live over the Radyo Pilipinas Facebook page and other social media pages of PCOO affiliated agencies.
“Building open spaces, promenades, parks - this is the heart and soul of the community. Iyong mga taong walang pera may mapupuntahan silang libre (People will have a place to go to for free),” Remollo said.
The mayor added the open spaces will be used as venues for competitive sports for young people who have been confined in their homes during the pandemic.
Earlier, the city government reclaimed a part of Rizal Boulevard which will be transformed as a recreational place with an amphitheater, fountains, park spaces, venue for beach sports, and the proposed Dumaguete tower.
Remollo also shared that the city government spearheaded the construction of two major bridges in Colon St. and the one near the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) during the pandemic last year to decongest the city’s traffic situation.
“Sinadya ko yun para people will not feel the traffic. Next month, hopefully pwede na magamit ang bridges. Strategic bridges ito we built to decongest traffic. Isa sa mga pitfalls sa business and its not conducive sa business kung traffic ang lugar (I did this so people will not feel the traffic. Hopefully these will be operational next month. These bridges are strategic to decongest the traffic. It’s one of the pitfalls and it’s also not conducive for doing businesses if the city has really bad traffic),” Remollo explained.
During the interview, the mayor thanked the national government for providing assistance to cities and municipalities like Dumaguete City under the Bayanihan 1 and the Bayanihan 2, respectively.
The Dumaguete City government is currently readying for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines.
“We are conserving our resources para sa vaccine na inaangkat ng national (government). Bibili rin kami based sa allocation ng national government. Malaking bagay na ang pondo ng lokal kino-conserve natin para sa real thing: ang vaccine that would will ultimately put an end to this pandemic (We are conserving our resources so we can order the vaccines which will procured by the national government. We will also procure our own based on the allocation of the national government. It is important that we conserve funds from the local government for the real thing which is the vaccine that will ultimately put an end to this pandemic),” Remollo emphasized.
He announced that the city government has P30-M in savings from last year and the city government plans to use it to buy COVID-19 vaccines. (ral/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
