DENR launches 'Build Back Better Project' in Catanduanes

VIRAC, Catanduanes (PIA) - The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office here spearheaded the launching of the "Build Back Better Project" in this island-province on February 9, 2021.

PENR Officer Imelda D. Baltazar led the activity with the theme: “Protect Rivers Today, Save Lives Tomorrow” which aims to stabilize riverbanks and river easements through series of bamboo planting activities in identified sites.

The event was undertaken pursuant to Executive Order 120 wherein one of the identified Key Result Areas (KRA 6) is the Intensified Watershed Management in which DENR is the lead agency. Likewise, priority of said KRA is the river bank stabilization and river easement recovery.

The activity is also in line with the partnership agreed to upon by the DENR, DSWD & DILG in rehabilitating stream banks and river easements through planting bamboos under Food for Work Program. In the Province of Catanduanes, one of the identified sites is located in Barangay Manambrag, in the Municipality of San Andres.

One of the highlights of said activity is the distribution of food packs from DSWD to twenty (20) identified beneficiaries of the barangay who were tasked to monitor the planted bamboo propagules to ensure 100% survival rate as part of maintenance and protection activity. 

A total of 1,009 bamboo propagules were planted along the riverbank of Brgy. Manambrag.

The launching was participated by representatives from the provincial government headed by Gov. Joseph C. Cua through Provincial Administrator Lemuel Surtida, LGU San Andres, headed by Mayor Peter C. Cua, representatives from DSWD, DTI, DOST, DPWH, DILG, PNP, Philippine Army, Barangay Council and community members of Manambrag, and DENR-PENRO Catanduanes employees. DENR Regional Office was represented by the Chief of Licenses, Patents and Deeds Division, For. Ferdinand L. Baltazar and staff, technical personnel from the Conservation and Development Division, and staff from the Office of the Assistant Regional Director for Special Concerns.
