DOLE, DOTr earmark P30M for bamboo planting along Cagayan River banks

LAL-LO, Cagayan, Feb. 3 (PIA) - - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) vowed to give a total of P30 million fund for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) of this province who will tapped help restore the Cagayan River. 

Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, during the launching of the Cagayan River Restoration, said he will download P20 million fund to compensate OFWs affected by the pandemic who will tapped to plant bamboos and other tree species suited along the Cagayan Riverbank as part of the restoration program of the Cagayan River. 

During the launch, 185 bamboo propagules were planted in the 925-meter stretch of Cagayan Riverbank along Barangay Bangag.

DOLE is part of the Build Back Better Task Force which was created to undertake post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery programs for typhoon-affected areas to include Cagayan Valley which was heavy devastated by a "mega flood" late last year. 

"There are a lot of OFWs here so I will give money to train them to plant bamboos to strengthen the riverbank and teach them on how earn from the planted bamboos," Bello said. 

Secretary Arthur P. Tugade also promised to add P10 million to encourage OFWs to plant more trees and bamboos to protect the riverbank from further erosion in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural resources, the Local Government Units and other concerned agencies. 

"We've been roaming around the province, we gave boats, nego-karts and financial assistance to start business to create seeds of employment in Cagayan," Tugade said. 

The two secretaries also vowed to take their respective roles in the Build Back Better program of the government, especially those who were severely devastated by the 'mega flood' that happened last year in most parts of the province. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
