ILOILO CITY, Feb. 4 (PIA) - - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Western Visayas is calling on the public to support and promote legal adoption as the country observes the National Celebration of Adoption Consciousness this February.
DSWD Field Office VI Adoption Focal Person Melin Gerona said the National Celebration of Adoption Consciousness intends to promote legal adoption as an act of unconditional love and support that ensures the welfare and best interest of orphaned, abandoned, neglected, and surrendered children.
Through its Adoption Resource and Referral Section, DSWD VI spearheads advocacy activities to mark the observance anchored on this year’s theme “Pagmamahal Palaganapin, Legal na Pag-aampon Ating Gawin (Spread Unconditional Love Through Legal Adoption).”
Gerona said the theme calls for action to the public to do the legal process of adoption as well as encourage the families or couples with children directly entrusted to them to legalize the process.
As part of the advocacy on legal adoption, DSWD will be popularizing RA 11222 or the Simulated Birth Rectification Act. RA 11222, an act allowing the rectification of Simulated Birth Records and prescribing administrative adoption proceedings.
RA 11222 also exempts from criminal, civil, and administrative liability those who simulated the birth record of a child prior to the effectivity of the law, provided, that the petition for adoption with an application for the rectification of the simulated birth record is filed within 10 years from the effectivity of the law.
The law further provides for a simpler and less costly administrative adoption proceeding where the child has been living with the person or persons who simulated her or his birth record for at least three years before its effectivity which was on March 29, 2019.
Gerona said RA11222 has a 10-year window of implementation, which means this is only until March 29, 2029.
She encouraged the public to be an adoption advocate, simply by flooding the FB page or their personal account with selfies or groufies using the hashtags #LegalAdoptionIsLove, #AdoptionIsLove, and #LegalAdoption. (JSC/laf/PIA6 Iloilo)
