MAASIN CITY, March 1 (PIA) -- Overflowing and erosion along Amparo river in Macrohon town, S. Leyte will now be a thing of the past with a completed flood mitigation structure project, a major protection dike built by the field office of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
In a press statement, the DPWH-Southern Leyte District Engineering Office reported that Amparo River is a prominent watercourse that traverses two barangays, Mabini and Amparo, which are vulnerable to flooding, thus a flood mitigation structure was a felt need.
Chris Marlou Maturan, village chief of barangay Mabini and direct beneficiary of the flood control project, was quoted in the DPWH-SLDEO report as saying that typhoons, Bising, Basyang, and Ruping years back had flooded their village, the floodwaters reaching above-head high in depth, endangering lives and properties of the residents.
“Dako ang aho pasalamat niining project nga gigahin diri sa Amparo-Mabini nga river control kay sa sitwasyon karon safety na ang among barangay ug ang mga tawo,” (I am really grateful for this river control project here in Amparo-Mabini because our village and people are now safe), Maturan declared.
The Amparo-Mabini River flood control structure is a 425-linear meter stone masonry punctuated on steel sheet piles, the project having an allocation of P 50-M.
“The construction of flood control is always included in our priority development projects. We believe it is the permanent solution to safeguard lives and properties of the residents living near rivers and other flood-prone areas,” DPWH-SLDEO District Engineer Manolo Rojas was quoted as saying in the report.
Aside from preventing flooding over the nearby areas of the river, flood control projects also protect against scouring and erosion along riverbanks, the DPWH-SLDEO press statement also said. (nbq/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
