CALOOCAN CITY, Feb. 25 (PIA) -- Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco on Wednesday ordered the temporary closure of the city's Centennial Park, starting today, in connection with the recent spike in COVID-19 cases recorded by the City Health Department.
"On February 6, our active cases were only 33, the lowest in this year. But it has reached 209 today. We need to prevent the increasing number of cases and this is what we can do by implementing precautionary measures," Mayor Toby said in a Facebook post.
"Every day, especially on Saturday and Sunday, Navotas Centennial Park is visited by those who want to exercise or just hang out. We can see people in here, whether Navoteño or not, and they often gather together even though we have been reminded several times to maintain social distancing," Tiangco added.
He said the need to temporarily close the Navotas Centennial Park, until further notice, is in line with their guidelines that put premium on their citizens' health.
"In connection with the increase in our cases and the need to implement policies to take care of the health of our citizens, we need to temporarily close Navotas Centennial Park starting tomorrow, 25 February, until the next notice," he said.
"We hope to prevent the chances of having a big gathering because it can be a superspreader event or activity that causes widespread COVID-19," the mayor explained.
"We don't want to restrict but for the good of all, we need to do this. We expect your support and cooperation," Tiangco added.
The Navotas Centennial Park is a waterfront park facing the Manila Bay. It is the largest open space in the city and considered to be the northern metro's version of the Baywalk. (PIA NCR)
