PRRD hails E. Samareños magnanimity

BORONGAN CITY, March 19 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte hailed the unity, magnanimity, and sovereignty of the early Filipinos to the Spaniards 500 years ago.

President Duterte led the unveiling of the 3rd historical marker in Ngolos, part of Guiuan town, the site of the Philippine leg of the first circumnavigation of the world.

He was assisted by Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone, Rep. Maria Fe Abunda, and Guiuan Mayor Analiz Kwan.

“The event marked our ancestors' first contact with the Spaniards,” the President addressed the lean crowd composed of the provincial officials of E. Samar and municipal officials of Guiuan town.

He then praised the early Filipinos for a show of humanity.

“Thus an opportunity for our forbears to show their unity, magnanimity, and sovereignty to our foreign guests,” he said.

“In Homonhon, our ancestors exemplified the unique  generosity of the Filipinos when they helped the Spaniards.”

He urged his countrymen to reflect on the events that shaped the nations’ history so that the people may reinvigorate the historical and socio-civic consciousness especially the new generations.

“As inheritors of this complicated yet glorious past, the duty now rests on our shoulders to continue the aspirations of our forbears,” the President said.

He then asked his people to appreciate the rich history of the Filipinos and “never again allow any other tribe to compromise our sovereignty.”

“Invaders who would come and who would stay here and contribute the richness of our culture and of course in the way we live,” he said.
