DOST, NAST PHL hold Regional Scientific Meeting for Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, April 28 (PIA) – The Department of the Science and Technology (DOST), its Mindanao regional offices, and the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) held its two-day Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) with the theme “Learning from the Past, Coping with the Present, Moving to the Next” on April 27 to 28 via zoom to tackle topics pertaining to the country’s science and technology sector and discuss innovative solutions for current concerns brought by the new normal.

“This Regional Scientific Meeting conducted by NAST PHL is in support of President Rodrigo Duterte’s thrust in bringing science and technology closer to the people in the regions,”DOST-10 Regional Director Alfonso Alamban shared.

In consonance with Executive Order (EO) 818 s. 1982, the first ever virtual RSM provides an open space for technological conversation as it aims to consult and hear the experiences and insights of various scientists, researches, and people from the private sector about the most pressing science and technology related issues in Mindanao.

The collated information and recommendations that will be gathered and consolidated will then be discussed on the 43rd annual science meeting on July by the DOST and NAST PHL and will serve as a key point in potential science-programs in future endeavors.

“Reeling from the SARS epidemic in 2003, the Philippines was in adequately prepared with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic officially declared by the World Health Organization more than a year ago, the discussions in these meeting will revolve around the existing gaps and problems in healthcare delivery and health infrastructure [on our country],” NAST Philippines president Rhodora Azanza said.

In the meeting, the DOST, NAST PHL, and its guest speakers discussed areas of improvement and potential solutions on the impact of COVID-19 in the Mindanao food system, natural resources degradation, viral evolution and dynamics, systems approaches to address present-day hazards, education in the new normal, and balancing economic activity and health concerns.

Through the Mindanao RSM, the DOST and NAST PHL hopes to not only bring great minds together in finding solutions to the country’s problems, but to also make every Filipino to be more scientifically empowered. (VPSBautista/PIA10)
