CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 17 (PIA)--To address concerns on overcrowded tourism spots in light of the surge of coronavirus (COVID)-19 cases in the region, the Department of Tourism (DOT)-10 has vowed to strengthen its coordination with the local government units (LGUs) to ensure strict adherence to the health protocols and guidelines for tourism areas.
“This is a very basic issue. The rules are very clear. We just need to work on our partnership with the LGU and other implementing arm to really ensure that the health protocols are applied [and followed] in our tourist destinations and attractions,” DOT-10 Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Decius Esmedalla said during the Northen Mindanao Task Force for COVID-19's weekly press conference.
According to Esmedalla, they are now monitoring key tourist spots in the region with the LGUs to make certain that such tourist establishments are following the Memorandum Circular 2021-001, which mandates the establishments to have limited capacity to ensure physical distancing and the observance of basic health protocols such as the wearing of masks, temperature checks, and hand sanitizing areas.
As regards the move to temporarily close the “balsas” (floating cottages) and beaches in Misamis Oriental by the governor, DOT-10 says that it fully respects Governor Yevgeney Vincente B. Emano's decision believing that LGUs are more conversant with the state of their respective health and economies.
“At the end of the day, they’re the ones (LGUs) who know what’s going on in their surroundings especially these pandemic times,” he said. (VPBautista/PIA10)
