PASIG CITY, May 31 (PIA) - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) joins other government agencies and the rest of the world in celebrating World No Tobacco Day today amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We know that cigarette smoke is dangerous. Inhaling second-hand or third-hand smoke are as dangerous. All of these kinds of smoking can cause diseases and death. At this time of pandemic, everything has to be done to keep ourselves healthy, particularly our lungs. Health is our first shield from COVID-19 complications,” said MMDA Chairperson Benhur Abalos in his video message.
According to MMDA, since 2010, the agency has been partnering with different sectors from the government and civic societies to intensify the campaign and promote smoke-free environment.
The Metro Manila Council also passed a resolution urging all local government units (LGUs) to adopt the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. All 17 LGUs in Metro Manila have smoke-free ordinances, 10 have comprehensive and seven are aligned with WHO-FCTC.
This year, MMDA is also joined by the EDSA Busway Concessionaires in promoting smoke-free, healthier public transportation.
“Local governments are doing their part of implementing the laws and create high level of public awareness,” added Abalos.
The MMDA chief likewise urges the Filipinos, not only the public commuters, to protect themselves from illness particularly COVID-19 by stopping the habit and promote smoke-free lives.
“Let us all “Choose Health, Go Smoke-Free! Commit to Quit Today!”
World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of tobacco, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
