Globe saw an improvement of its efforts in the fiberization of more homes and businesses three months after an order issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) allowed telecom companies to construct infrastructure projects within the allowable right-of-way limits of national roads.
The order has boosted Globe’s bid to bring fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) lines to more households in key areas in the country. Since the third week of March this year, Globe has been able to lay down FTTH lines complemented by 96 DWPH permits. The right-of-way order has also allowed fiberization to support Mobile Builds from 39 permits of DPWH.
“The support of DPWH, and the government in general, will really allow us to decongest demand for internet connectivity in the highly-urbanized areas in the country. This will help us fast-track laying out our fiber cables to more households that are now more dependent on having reliable, fast, and accessible internet,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Program Delivery, Network Technical Group.
The new Department Order No. 29 or the “DPWH Policy on Telecommunications and Internet Infrastructure Pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 11494,” eases earlier right-of-way prohibitions especially on the construction of posts, allowing excavations and restoration works for ICT infrastructure projects along allowable right-of-way limits of national roads and highways.
With the removal of such a major bottleneck, Globe expects inspection and approval of sites to be completed in just a few days, instead of several weeks or even months from the previous process.
“This will make it faster for the company to bring high-speed broadband services to more homes and businesses through Fiber-to-the-Homes (FTTH) this year. We are confident we will hit our target of making one million fiber lines available this year,” added Agustin.
The DPWH’s order is in compliance with Bayanihan Acts 1 and 2 which streamline requirements for getting permits from local government units and national government agencies for the installation of new cell towers.
Globe has allocated the bulk of its P70-billion capital expenditure budget on data network construction to deliver world-class internet connectivity to Filipinos.
Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) particularly UN SDG No. 9 that highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.
