MANILA – Four new mobile container X-ray machines will boost the scanning performance of the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
The units were officially turned over to the BOC on Friday at the X-ray Inspection Project (XIP) examination area at the Asian Terminals, Inc. (ATI) premises in Port Area, Manila.
In a statement, the BOC said the additional assets of the XIP have features that allow non-intrusive scans at a rate of 120 containers per hour and could produce clearer pictures of the items being scanned that will significantly improve the capacity to identify smuggled commodities.
The units will be deployed to ports with high-volume scanning operations -- Manila International Container Port, Port of Cebu, Port of Subic, and Port of Cagayan de Oro.
The BOC has 124 other X-ray machines.
BOC Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero, deputy commissioners, district collectors, chiefs, and other key officials received the units.
In his message, Guerrero said the procurement is in line with the directives of President Rodrigo Duterte to intensify efforts against the entry of smuggled goods.
“The bureau has consistently modernized its processes and procedures under his administration, one of which is the procurement of the additional assets. Through his leadership, the Bureau of Customs has undergone substantial transformation and reformation,” he added.
The turnover ceremony was also attended by Department of Finance Assistant Secretary Dakila Elteen Napao, Philippine Trade and Investment Center Vice President for International Trading Services Group Mark Brian dela Cruz, and representatives of security inspection firm Nuctech Company headed by Gao Peng and ADI.
