TACLOBAN CITY– A courier of the New People's Army (NPA) has surrendered in Southern Leyte as the government heightens its drive against the communist terrorist group.
The Philippine Army's 802nd Infantry Brigade reported on Tuesday that alias Nap reached out on November 5 to the Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, and soldiers of the Army's 14th Infantry Battalion.
"As a courier and contact, he facilitated the procurement and delivery of supplies to the terrorist group. He acted as the eyes and ears of the NPA by monitoring the presence of government forces in the area. He also identified possible targets for recruitment in villages and as messenger," said Capt. Kaharudin Cadil, spokesperson of the Philippine Army's 802nd Infantry Brigade.
The surrenderer handed over medical equipment and personal belongings that includes a blood pressure monitor, a stethoscope, and a uniform provided by the communist terrorist group.
"Nap" disclosed to local authorities that he was recruited and deceived by Fermin Gozon alias Jaguar, an NPA leader in the southern part of Leyte Island.
He became an active supporter of NPA as a contact and courier in 2017.
The intensified campaign about the benefits for surrenderers has encouraged the NPA member to reach out to authorities.
In a statement, Lt. Col. Ernesto Dela Rosa, commander of the 14th Infantry Battalion said the continuing information campaign is very vital in accomplishing the objectives of the whole of nation approach against NPA.
"It made the people aware of the current programs of the government, which promote good governance and the delivery of services to the communities. It brings to a realization that indeed the government is working to address the concerns being exploited by the NPA in the countryside," Dela Rosa said.
The Philippines' Anti-Terrorism Council has designated the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA, and National Democratic Front as terrorist groups.
The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines also listed the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization. (PNA)
