The Ateneo de Manila University remained the top school in the Philippines, according to the latest global rankings published by the British higher education magazine Times Higher Education (THE).
The Jesuit-run institution ranked within the 1011-1200 bracket, compared to its 351-500 grouping in previous rankings.
“It is an honor for us to be one of only four Filipino schools in the rankings, and proof that our work in teaching, research, and social engagement is recognized here at home and abroad,” said Ateneo university president Fr. Roberto Yap.
“Ateneo de Manila University is honored to continue its run as the top-ranked Philippine institution, public or private, in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.”
The University of the Philippines came in second place, while the University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University both landed at the 1501+ bracket of the rankings.
Cebu Technological University, Central Luzon State University, University of Eastern Philippines, Mapua University, Mariano Marcos State University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and the Visayas State University were listed with “reporter” status, meaning that they provided data to be included in the rankings but did not meet the eligibility criteria.
“At first glance, the top of the list shows little change from last year… But on closer inspection, the upper echelon of the World University Rankings reveals that China’s best institutions are inching closer than ever to entering the top 10 – Tsinghua University and Peking University have both risen a few places to sit in 12th and 14th positions, respectively,” THE said.
Seven institutions from the United States have conquered the top ten spots.
The latest world university rankings include around 1,900 universities across 108 countries and regions.
The schools were assessed based on 18 performance indicators across five areas, namely: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.
