Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista said the passenger capacity of the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental is expected to increase by 72 percent, with the addition of a new terminal building.
Bautista and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo led the groundbreaking ceremony of the expansion of Laguindingan Airport’s Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) on Feb. 4.
With this, the pre-departure terminal’s capacity will increase from the current 500 to 860 passengers, representing a 72 percent increase.
“This will support the increase in ridership at the second-busiest airport in Mindanao,” Bautista said.
The airport currently accommodates 790 passengers at any given time, exceeding the pre-departure terminal’s capacity and leading to congestion.
Officials said the expansion will employ innovative modular construction using pre-fabricated structural steel, which is cost-effective, allows for swift construction, and is sustainable.
Once completed in June 2024, the building is expected to provide efficient and comfortable travel for passengers at the Northern Mindanao airports that serve the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Marawi, as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, and Bukidnon.
