BFAR sustains efforts on fish production amidst Covid-19 threat

BAUKO, Mountain Province, May 17 -- To ensure that fish farming activities remain unhampered, the  Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources(BFAR) through its Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) continues to implement various livelihood projects in  the province following quarantine measures of border entry points set by respective local government units.

With this, a total of 300,000 tilapia fingerlings and 16 metric tons of feeds to include fry mash, pre-starter and starter were distributed to benefit 549 fisherfolk in the municipalities of Bauko, Bontoc, Sabangan, Sagada, Tadian, and Barlig.

These aquaculture inputs are intended for 175 units pond culture, 135 units rice fish culture, and one-unit fish cage projects. Each unit of the pond demo culture corresponds to a maximum area of 200sq.m. at 5-pc/sq.m. stocking density.

For the rice fish culture, each unit shall have a maximum area of 500 sq.m at 2-pc/sq.m. stocking density.

Alongside the fingerlings provided are the first batch of fish feeds requirement and the other half will be provided after two months of culture.

Distribution of inputs was  done in Bauko, the boundary entry point of Mountain Province and Benguet,  with the assistance of Provincial Fisheries Office and  the local government offices   that  facilitated the hauling of project inputs  to the   project areas areas.

 

Mountain Province contributes the least fish production in CAR with only 0.36% or 15.03 MT (PSA, 2019). Thus, the aim of SAAD to increase fish production and alleviate poverty in the poorest provinces in the country.(BFAR-CAR)
