IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay, June 02 (PIA) – Department of Agriculture is doubling efforts to enhance its preparations for the wet season planting of rice said Agriculture Secretary William Dar in today’s Laging Handa-Network Briefing (LH-NB) with PCOO Sec. Martin Andanar.
Sec. Dar said Department of Agriculture (DA) will be covering almost 2.5 Million hectare this wet season planting with the intent to really improve the yield per hectare from the present coverage of Four (4) metric tons, and with good agricultural practices coupled with addition of fertilizer “ay mas magiging mataas ang ani, at eventually mas mataas na kita ng ating magsasaka.”
Dar said, this effort is in partnership with the Local Government Units (LGUs) all over the country as he hopes for the best of arrangements with LGUs “para makikinabang na rin ang ating magsasaka amidst the pandemic,” he emphasized.
Dar said he has instructed its Regional Field Offices nationwide to accelerate its coordination with its LGUs to discuss and implement what needs to be, and what can be implemented, concerning wet season planting.
Meanwhile, Pagadian City Mayor Samuel S. Co, who was also in the LH-NB, thanked Sec. Dar for the rice seedling his city received.
“We are very happy we received rice seedlings from DA,” he said.
Mayor Co said Pagadian City received around 1600 bags of rice seeds from DA and requested from Sec. Dar if Pagadian can still have additional bags of rice seeds for its local farmers.
“Medyo nahirapan kami sa distribution, kasi medyo kulang, sana madagdagan ang seedlings namin,” he requested.
Co explained, one bag of rice seeds is good for half a hectare of rice farm, that is why he is hoping that DA will consider sending additional bags for Pagadian.
“Patitingnan ko sa DA Region 9 kung meron pang pwedeng maidagdag na buto para sa inyo,” Sec. Dar responded.
Sec. Dar also talked in passing about DA’s intervention for the beneficiaries of the Balik Probinsya Program, saying the department is ready with its support, such as capacity building for the resettled families; outright starter kit will be given to them so that they can immediately start gardening when they reached the resettlement area; and they can also avail DA’s Agri-Business enterprises program.
