Aklan logs 11th confirmed COVID-19 case

KALIBO, AKLAN, July 1 (PIA) – The province of Aklan recorded its 11th confirmed case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on June 29, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO)-Aklan.

In an official statement released by PHO-Aklan, the 11th COVID-19 patient of the province is a 23-year old female student and a locally stranded individual (LSI) from Kalibo, Aklan.

The patient was able to return to Aklan from Cebu via Iloilo on June 11 on board Trans-Asia Shipping Lines.

She was stranded in Cebu after reviewing for a board exam due to the implementation of community quarantine in the said city.

Upon returning in Aklan, she was profiled by Kalibo Ligtas COVID Center; but instead of going home, she opted to rent and stay in a boarding house to undergo and finish the 14-day quarantine.

On June 22, a specimen collection was obtained from the patient and was sent to Western Visayas Medical Center, Department of Pathology, Sub-National Laboratory for confirmatory testing.

The said LSI was able to complete the two-week isolation period that prompted her to go home before the result was out.

However, on June 29, the result was released with interpretation of SARS-CoV-2, a causative agent of COVID-19, viral RNA was detected.

In a media interview, Provincial Health Officer I Dr. Cornelio Cuachon, Jr. confirmed that upon knowing the result, the patient was immediately transferred to a Ligtas COVID Center in Kalibo for proper and close monitoring.

He added that contact tracing by the local health office here is being conducted to individuals who had close contact with the patient. (LTP/SQP/PIA Aklan)
