Dgte extends rice subsidy to 15T families not included in SAP

DUMAGUETE CITY, July 8 (PIA) -- The Dumaguete City government has rolled out rice assistance of 25 kilos to around 15,000 families in the 30 barangays that were not included in the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) and Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

“We are extending rice subsidy to the families especially those were not qualified for government’s SAP because we understand the Covid 19 dili mopili madatu ka o pobre ang affected (COVID-19 affects both rich and poor),” explained Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo.

Remollo said there are more than 26,000 qualified families in DSWD's list out of 40,000 households in the city.

This prompted the city government to give 25 kilos of rice for each family not included in DSWD's list.

More than P33-M worth of funds have been earmarked for the purchase of 30,000 bags of rice.

This is its third wave of relief or rice distribution to Dumaguete residents amid Covid 19 pandemic.

However, the mayor said there is a possibility that there will be fourth round of rice assistance of five or ten kilos to all families “because we do not know when this Covid ends, maybe it will reach up to December, we still have something to give to the people."

For now, the barangays that have yet to receive the rice assistance will have to wait for the announcement from the barangay officials on the schedule of the distribution.

Barangay officials are urged to assist in the rice distribution to ensure that it is orderly and in compliance with minimum health standards. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
