Youth urged to apply for science scholarships

SAN JOSE, Antique, July 10 (PIA) -- Online applications for the 2021 S&T undergraduate scholarship programs of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) are now available for graduating Grade 12 students who wish to pursue careers in the science community.

DOST-Antique Provincial Science and Technology director Abraham Fabila encouraged the Antiqueños youth to apply for the science grants as it could help them in taking science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related degrees.

High school graduates prior to the K-12 Program are also eligible to apply for as long as they have not yet earned any post-secondary units in college.

Fabila likewise encouraged non-STEM students to pass their applications provided that they belong to the top five percent of the graduating class.

To note, science grants are composed of the Republic Act 7687 and the Merit scholarship.

Under RA 7687, it comprises of students who belong to families whose socio-economic status does not exceed the cut-off values for certain indicators.

Meanwhile, the Merit Scholarship is awarded to students who have high aptitude in STEM and whose family annual gross income exceeds the regional poverty threshold.

According to Fabila, scholars will enjoy the following privileges: P40,000 tuition fee subsidy per academic year for those who will enroll in private higher education institute; P7, 000 monthly allowance,  P10,000 yearly book allowance, transportation allowance, graduation allowance, thesis allowance, group premium insurance, and P1, 000 PE uniform allowance.

Upon completion of the degree, DOST scholars are obliged to render service in the country for a minimum period corresponding to the span of time they enjoyed the scholarship.

The nationwide scholarship examination is slated on October 25, 2020.

Records from the DOST showed there were 28 Antiqueños who passed the scholarship exam in 2020.
