CALOOCAN CITY, July 4 (PIA) -- Strengthening the Philippines’ fight against terror groups, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Friday signed into law the Anti-Terrorism Bill of 2020, his spokesperson said.
Despite certifying the measure as urgent earlier, however, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque said Duterte had needed to evaluate the concerns mounted by some groups before the bill was signed.
“Terrorism, as we often said, strikes anytime and anywhere. It is a crime against the people and humanity; thus, the fight against terrorism requires a comprehensive approach to contain terrorist threats,” Roque said.
“The signing of the aforesaid law demonstrates our serious commitment to stamp out terrorism, which has long plagued the country and has caused unimaginable grief and horror to many of our people,” he added.
Republic Act No. 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, then takes effect 15 days after publication.
The new law, which amends the 2007 Human Security Act, will now penalize incitement, recruitment, fund-raising, money laundering, and participation in terrorist activities, among others.
Security experts have also pointed out that the measure would send a clear message to terror elements that the Philippines will no longer be a safe haven to those contemplating terrorist attacks or supporting activities in this country due to its deterrent effects. (PIA NCR)
