Borongan City employees plant trees on Arbor Day

BORONGAN CITY, August 5 (PIA) - - A total of 156 participants most of them employees of Borongan City led by City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda, Vice-Mayor Emmanuel T. Tiu Sonco and Sangguniang Panglungsod Members  planted trees on Arbor Day, July 30, 2020 at Sitio Cagsawa, Brgy. Cabalagnan, Borongan City.

According to Vicky Mae C. Gavilan, environmental management specialist II of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) close to 3,000 Narra trees and 2,000 more fruit bearing trees were planted.

“The city employees hiked the uphill planting area, undeterred by the muddy elevation,” Gavilan said.

During the planting of trees, the participants were also advised to observe health protocols such as:  wearing of face masks and maintaining  social distance.

“I thank Mayor Agda for being supportive.  I did not expect that he would join the team, until reaching the elevated planting area,” the CENRO officer said.

The area consists of four project sites which are the area on assisted natural regeneration (ANR).  The four projects are: reforestation project, city tree-park, wildlife rescue project, and agro-forestry projects.

Other local officials and national agencies that joined the tree planting are:  Sangguniang Kabataan Officials and Brgy. Councils of Canyupay and Cabalagnan, DENR-CENRO, Philippine Army, PNP, Coast Guard, BFP, BJMP, CDRRMO, DTI, and DPWH.

The private organizations that also joined the tree planting  are the  LGBTQ team and local bikers who were greeted with an 800-meter hike from the main road which offered great views of the verdant hills of Borongan and Maydolong.

Arbor Day celebration is provided in the approved Ordinance No. 119, series of 2015 which mandates the city-wide tree planting aimed in restoring the forest cover to mitigate the impact of green-house effect.  (nbq/SDC/PIA-E. Samar with reports from Borongan City Information Office)
